In the Bible’s book of Colossians we read these words in 3:12 – “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience.” And in 4:5-6 we read “Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.”
Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas once said, “Good manners will open doors that the best education cannot.” The late Fred Astaire was a prophet when he proclaimed, “The hardest job kids face today is learning good manners without seeing any.”
Good manners and etiquette are a firm foundation for proper civil discourse. Without good manners and etiquette social interactions quickly become a manifestation of evolutionary dogma – might makes right and only the strongest survive.
It is time for Christians everywhere to make good manners and etiquette a focus of the education of our children and families. Stay tuned for my conversation with author and speaker Gregg Jackson next in this episode of SER.
